Here are his advice for what anyone can do in their daily life to help put an end to slavery.

1 – Put pressure on large companies

Are you working for a company with international reach? Try to find out from your human resources department if your employer is taking a stand against modern slavery. Encourage the management to take action, e.g. by issuing an official statement against slavery or paying attention to the supply chain to ensure that goods and services are not purchased from countries where slavery is an issue.

2 – Encourage political action

Urge the government of your country to put in place effective laws combatting modern day slavery. An interesting source of inspiration is the UK Modern Slavery Act of 2015 which, among other things, consolidates existing slavery and trafficking offences, provides mechanisms for seizing traffickers’ assets and channelling some of that money towards victims for compensation payments and mandates big businesses to make public their efforts to stop the use of slave labour by its suppliers.

3 – Be an informed, ethical consumer

Buy products and services that are ethical. Look for corporations that declare where their goods and services are coming from, are environmentally friendly and give back to society.

4 – Protect your children

Traffickers often use social media and other channels on the internet to get in contact with young people and draw them into prostitution. As a parent, you can put boundaries in place for how your children use mobile phones and other devices and look into what they are doing when they are online.

5 – Join the fight

If you have financial resources, consider supporting an organisation fighting slavery. You can also organise awareness-raising and fund-raising activities in your neighbourhood. Visit YouCanFreeUs for ideas of what you can do.
