The group performed six songs, after music by the Public School 22 Choir from Brooklyn, New York and before prelude music by the U.S. Marine Corps Band. The swearing-in ceremonies of Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama, presided over by Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor and Chief Justice Roberts, drew a crowd of hundreds of thousands of spectators to Capitol Hill, and millions more on television and web broadcasts. Other musical guests on the program were The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson, and Beyoncé Knowles.
This singular honor was bestowed upon Lee by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. United States Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee is vice chairman of this committee and nominated Lee. The committee approved his nomination, and Senator Alexander came to Lee’s campus in early November to announce the invitation.
